On a hand-packing bench, a worker may need one seal now and another in ten seconds. A continuous roll can be convenient, but a loose strip of backing soon curls around boxes and elbows. I would ask the packer to show how the label leaves the roll before deciding whether a tear line belongs in the construction.
A perforated roll usually lets the operator separate a short length of liner between labels. It does not automatically make the sticker itself easier to peel, and it is not interchangeable with a slit backing or a dry lift tab. The decision starts with the sequence: dispense, tear, peel, apply, then reach for the next piece.
Put the Tear Line Where Hands Need It
| Question | Ask the packing team | Proof check |
|---|---|---|
| One label or a strip? | How many are pulled at once? | Perforation interval |
| Where is the roll? | On a spindle, dispenser or tabletop? | Tear angle and web tension |
| What is applied? | Box seal, product label or bag closure? | Adhesive contact area |
| What is thrown away? | Individual liners or one waste roll? | Bench tidiness and disposal |
For a tea box seal with an original leaf illustration, the printed design should stay fully on the label. The perforation should not nick its edge or split the wordmark. Ask for a proof that marks label cutline, liner gap and perforation separately. A tidy visual mockup cannot show whether the web tears too easily during unwinding.
Test Strength Against Convenience
A deep perforation may tear beautifully when held in the hand but break while the roll is being mounted. A shallow one may require two hands and an awkward tug. Request a short production-style roll and let staff use the real dispenser, gloves and carton position. Watch for the next label lifting when the previous segment is torn away.
State the roll core, outer diameter limit, winding direction and labels per roll. The right label artwork on the wrong winding can still slow the table. If the same labels will later run through an automatic applicator, treat that as a separate compatibility review rather than assuming the hand-packing construction will transfer.
Brief the Supplier With the Whole Motion
- Send a photo of the packing station and dispenser
- Confirm finished label size and liner gap
- Mark the perforation on a dieline
- Specify roll core, winding and maximum diameter
- Trial tearing, peeling and application in sequence
- Check that the next printed label remains undamaged
The roll setup guide explains core and winding choices; the easy-peel guide covers a different handling problem. Share the dispenser and tear position through the label specification planner. A good perforation is almost invisible to the customer and obvious to the hand using it.
Questions Before You Order
Are perforated rolls compatible with automatic applicators?
Do not assume so. A tear line can affect web strength and sensing; confirm the applicator requirements and test a proposed roll on the actual machine.
Can a perforation run through the printed sticker?
That would change the finished label. Specify whether the perforation is in the liner between labels or intentionally through a detachable label section.
How should a buyer specify the roll?
Share label size, gap, core, winding, count per roll, tear position and the intended hand dispenser or packing motion.
